Chip studied Criminal Justice at East Tennessee State University where he earned both his A.S. degree (1979) and B.S. degree (1980) with honors. During that time, he served as an Auxiliary Police Officer. After college, Chip worked as a multi-line claims adjuster for a property and casualty insurer and as an interim claims manager for a national TPA. He attended the University of Richmond School of Law, working as a claims supervisor for a specialty insurer to pay his way, and earning his J.D. in 1986.

For nearly thirty years, Chip had concentrated his practice on the defense and prosecution of major injury cases, having tried several multi-million dollar cases to verdict.  He is recognized for his strengths in litigation and case strategy.
