Criminal Offenses

Seeking Legal Representation For Criminal Cases

If you are under investigation where drugs or firearms are involved, the result will most likely be a case seen before a judge and jury.  For illegal substances and firearms in particular, the result is a criminal case, and you could face jail time.  It is important to thoroughly research your options when seeking legal representation to handle such a case.  The criminal attorney you select may help to reduce your sentence should you be found guilty.

There are several options for representation when involved in a criminal investigation.  Some suspects choose to represent themselves, as this is a no-cost option.  However, regardless of how convincing you may appear in the courtroom, explaining your side of the story does not guarantee the case will move in your favor.   People who choose to represent themselves in the courtroom are not viewed favorably, by judge or jury.  If you choose to represent yourself with no legal council your chances of serving the maximum penalty are much higher.

A second option to consider for legal representation is to have a court-appointed criminal attorney selected for you.  However, because you are not involved in the selection process, communication challenges may arise that are critical to defending your case.  While the court appointed attorney option is convenient and economical, it may not be the best solution to representing your case.

Seeking advice from an established private criminal attorney is always the best option when involved in a criminal investigation.  Talk to several attorneys and ask him or her about their experience defending drug and firearm cases.  Their experiences should give you plenty of information for you to determine if he or she is the right attorney to handle your case.

When you search for a criminal attorney to defend you, identify one that practices in the county or city where the charge occurred.   It is just as important to seek out an attorney with the capacity to handle a quick trial and act with immediacy.  Criminal cases go before a judge quickly, typically between three and nine months.

While there are many fine and experienced court-appointed attorneys, there are several benefits associated with using a private criminal attorney.  A private attorney will provide an objective overview of the procedures and possible outcomes in your case.  In addition, he or she may have suggestions of pre-trial measures to prepare for your court day. Defense attorney’s are skilled in negotiating and cooperating with the prosecution and can effectively utilize witnesses in your favor.
